This article describes the difference between an Information Commons and a Learning Commons in terms of the integration of academic departments into the planning and operation of the commons. Might help us to define our scope.

While I do not agree with the author's 'barbarians at the gate' tone, the article is illustrative of the reservations voiced by some few in the profession who cling to the notion that scholarship in the library is and must be solitary and silent. I will allow that we should consider how we might extend the commons service model to include those whose immediate need is a quiet space to study alone.
