Congressional Committees

Congressional Committees, Environmental Organizations and Regulatory Agencies

 

There are several ways to see which committees have held hearings or issued reports on your topic:

 

Congressional Committees

 

Electronic:

 

Lexis Nexis Congressional

 

  • ·        Click on "Advanced Search".  Enter the manufacturing association or company under “search terms” (you may need to get creative here with associations and companies)

    ·        Use pull-down menu to select Witness Affiliation

    ·        Under “Search Within”, select “clear all” Then check the box next to hearings.

    ·        Under “Restrict by” change the date to “previous 5 years” or “previous 20 years”, etc.

    ·        Scan the list of results to find names of committees, both House and Senate who held relevant hearings AND to find hearings at which your association participated.

  • From the House of Representatives web site.
  • Select the committee(s) identified in Lexis Nexis Congressional. Look for a description of the committee under "Jurisdiction".

Senate Committees www.senate.gov/committees/index.cfm
  • From the Senate web site.
  • Select the committee(s) identified in Lexis Nexis Congressional. Look for a description of the committee under "about the Committee" link.

 

Search Congressional documents www.gpoaccess.gov/legislative.html
  • via GPO Access web site.

  • This provides a very succint description of the committee.

 

Environmental Organizations

Find Relevant Environmental Organizations

Follow steps under Lexis Nexis Congressional, above. 

  • Open up a relevant records from the results list.
  • Look for section titled “WITNESSES (and witness notations)”.  Scan the list for:
    • Environmental organizations involved with the topic. (eg. Environmental Defense Fund, etc.)
    • Find the organization's website and look for an "about us" link to determine the scope of their involvement in the industry or topic.

 

 

Regulatory Agencies

Find Responsible Agencies

Follow steps under Lexis Nexis Congressional, above. 

  • Open up relevant records from the results list.
  • Look for section titled “WITNESSES (and witness notations)”.  Scan the list for:
    • Government Agency representatives.

 

Other Sources:

  • Browse the Sector Notebook for your product, and other publications on the Hold Shelf;
  • For a description of the agency, go to agency webpage: DOE (including EIA, OIT), EPA, etc. and look for an “about us” link.
