Getting Started

The library's research page serves as a useful point of departure.

Especially useful for this assignment are the sections on:

Using CRUZCAT

A keyword search is probably the easiest way to get started. Once you find some titles that are useful, click on the Library of Congress subject headings to search further.

For this assignment, the following subject headings might be useful -- they are just a sample of relevant subject headings that you might want to look at:

France- bio- bibliography

France-Civilization-19th century

France-Civilization-1830-1900

France-Intellectual life-19th century

France-Social conditions-19th century

You also might want to browse the following call number areas both in McHenry Reference and in the general stacks:

DC (French history), N (art), PQ (French literature), GT (manners and customs), M (music)

After working with Cruzcat and browsing print resources, take a look at the full-text and bibliographic online databases, and then move outwards to generalized web searches. The better defined your search vocabulary, the better chance you have of finding good and reliable materials via a google search.

In addition to print and electronic textual resources, don't forget about visual resources like digital images, slides, films and maps as well as audio resources for music.
