Getting Started

The library's research page serves as a useful point of departure.

Especially useful for this assignment are the sections on:

Research Guides and Reference Works

Take a look at Christine Bunting's helpful list of print and electronic research guides, reference works, auction guides and dictionaries: you might like to print this.

Using Cruzcat, Melvyl and Worldcat

A keyword search is probably the best way to get started. Once you find some titles that are useful, click on the Library of Congress Subject headings for a more refined search. Try searching the following  broad subject headings in Cruzcat:

Art Feminism and art
Art and society Genre
Art criticism Graphic arts
Art -- History Illustration
Art -- Philosophy Painting
Composition Photography
Decorative arts Pictures
Drawing Symbolism in art

Electronic Databases

Once you have browsed the print reference materials, you will be better prepared for searching the electronic databases. Some of the databases listed below contain bibliographic citations, others contain full-text.

Finding Images at UCSC

The Library's Visual Resources department is located on the ground floor of McHenry. All of the staff members are very helpful and willing to share their expertise with you. They have prepared an excellent guide for finding digital images.
