Firefox and IE Extensions: LibX
LibX is a Firefox and IE extension that adds direct access to library catalogs and licensed ejournals. It adds a tool bar for searching the library catalogs Cruzcat and Melvyl, as well as the online journals list and Google Scholar. It also adds a right click menu that allows you to highlight any text on a web page and search for it in CRUZCAT or Google Scholar with UC-eLinks activated for links to articles. In addition, the right click menu has an option to reload the current webpage through the library Off-Campus Access service.
To add the extension, go to the LibX page and click the link to download. Your browser will warn you about allowing a site to install software on your computer. Click "allow".
To remove it, go to the tools menu in your browser and then Add-ons. Find LibX from the list and delete it.
Zotero and Endnote Web
Zotero is a free, open source Firefox extension to help you collect, manage, and cite your research sources. Citations are saved in the Firefox browser itself. Full information and tutorials are available on the Zotero website.
Endnote Web also helps collect, manage, and cite research sources. The library provides access to UCSC students, faculty, and staff through our subscription to Endnote's sister product, Web of Science. Endnote Web is free to the UCSC community and integrates well with the desktop version of Endnote, which is only available for purchase. Use the Endnote Web Firefox toolbar to download citations directly from a database into your Endnote library. Sign up for an account and get more information on the Endnote Web website.
Off-Campus Access Proxy Bookmarklet
The OCA bookmarklet lets you reload a web page through the UCSC Library's OCA proxy server. If the website you are visiting is one that the library has a subscription for, and you're presently off-campus, then you should get immediate access to the resource once you've logged in with your library barcode.
To add the bookmarklet, see instructions for each type of browser and platform or the 3 minute video tutorial.
To remove it, delete it from the list of bookmarks in the organize bookmarks pull-down menu.
Browser Search Plug-ins
A search plug-in allows you to add catalogs to the search box in the upper right of many web browsers. The default is Google but you can already select several other search engines (including Wikipedia, IMDB, and Amazon). Note -- these plug-ins work in Firefox 2.0+ and Internet Explorer 7.0+, but they are not compatible with Safari.

OCA Google Scholar (article results automatically loaded through the UCSC Off-Campus Access proxy server)
OCA JSTOR (article results automatically connected through the UCSC OCA proxy server)
To add other search plug-ins, click on the down-pointing triangle to the right of the Google icon in the search box at the upper right of your browser.
To remove the search plug-in from your Firefox browser, click the triangle to the right of the icon in the search box. Select "Manage Search Engines..." from the menu, select the plug-in you wish to remove, and click "Remove."
To remove the search plug-in from your Internet Explorer browser, click the triangle to the right of the icon in the search box and select "Change Search Defaults." Then select the plug-in you wish to remove, and click "Remove." .
Database and Catalog Search Gadgets
Search the library right from your iGoogle page, Google's web portal. If you already have an iGoogle page, make sure you are signed in (this link opens in a new window; log in and then close the browser window before clicking "Add to Google"). If you do not have an iGoogle page, you will need to create one, return to this page, and add one of the gadgets below by clicking "Add to Google."
