Attendance Policy
Attendance is mandatory for every class meeting and for the entire exam period on March 19. Please be on time: late arrivals count as an absence. There are no excused absences unless I am informed by email or phone ahead of time. You may not have more than two absences in order to receive a passing grade.

Everyone must work on the cases at least once before coming in for the mandatory scheduled exam time (March 19, 7:30-10:30 pm) I will either be in room 2353 upstairs or in my office.
Options are:
Sunday 1-4pm
Tuesday 10am to noon and 2:30-4:00pm
Wednesday 2:30-4:00pm
Thursday 10am to noon and 1:00-3:00pm

Instructions for Thursday March 5: If your manuscript facsimile is not housed in Special Collections, please bring it to class in order to work on exhibit preparation.
Julie Chen's presentation is scheduled for February 20, from 3:00-4:30pm in room 2353 of McHenry Library. We have a number of her books from Flying Fish Press in Special Collections and we will be displaying some of them on the day of her presentation. Unfortunately, due to illness, this talk has been cancelled.
Erwin Tomash will speak to our class on February 24 about his collection on the history of computing. Room 2353 of McHenry. Take a look at the online catalog of his library.
February 24 - March 19: we'll be meeting in room 2353. Keep your fingers clean, we will still be looking at Special Collections materials upstairs, especially on March 3 and 5.

nota bene: De Hamel should be read very carefully and Clemens/Graham should be treated as a reference book, but you need to skim through it to pick out the parts that you will need for your manuscript description project and your reports.
Week 1: De Hamel introduction, pp 8-13; Richard Clements article on manuscript and book production
Bible reading: Book of Genesis
Week 2: Clemens & Graham chapters 1 and 2, De Hamel chapter 1; Bible reading: one of the gospels (either Matthew or Luke). Optional: Margaret Manion article on the early illuminated gospel book.
Week 3: Clemens and Graham chapters 5 and 6 and de Hamel chapter 2. Start reading chapter 10 in Clemens & Graham.
By now you should have read the Book of Genesis and either the gospel of Matthew or Luke.
Week 4: Clemens and Graham chapters 3,4 and 8 and finish chapter 10. Reread one of the gospels and De Hamel ch. 2.
Start reading the Psalms.
Week 5: De Hamel chapter 3; Clemens and Graham chapters 7, 9 and 10. Bible reading: Psalms. Shailor, pp. 53-68.
Week 6: De Hamel chapters 4 and 7. Clemens and Graham chapter 12. Be sure to have read Clemens chapters 8 and 9.
Bible reading for weeks 6 and 7: Apocalypse.
Weeks 7 and 8: De Hamel Chapters 5 and 6. Clemens and Graham chapter 12. Vocabulary for books of hours and calendars in Michelle Brown.

Some of your facsimiles for the mansucript description project will also be on reserve. Books can be checked out for 24 hours -- if you need more time, please see me.
